Moving Forward as the Gulf Coast CCS Alliance

Over the last 5 years, our Alliance has brought together industry, policymakers and community leaders to advance carbon capture and storage (CCS) and position the region for long-term economic success. What started in Houston has now found strong community support in places like Anahuac, Beaumont and Port Arthur. Achieving our goals will take a coordinated regional effort to make the Gulf Coast a global hub for CCS. That’s why we’re moving forward as the Gulf Coast CCS Alliance.

As America’s energy backbone, the Gulf Coast is in a strong position to lead CCS development, thanks to its favorable geology, existing infrastructure, and skilled workforce. It has all the key pieces needed to scale CCS in ways few other regions can. Communities across the Gulf Coast are home to major ports, refineries, and power plants that view CCS as a way to stay competitive globally by producing cleaner, more efficient products. Using CCS can also help keep jobs and investment in these local communities.

A study by the Texas Association of Business (TAB) highlights the major economic impact the CCS industry could have along the Texas Gulf Coast. It found that across four CCS project scenarios in 12 counties in South and Southeast Texas, CCS could add an average of $1.8 billion to the state’s economy. The impact on individual counties ranged from about $317 million in Newton County to $3.7 billion in Orange County. These results show just how much opportunity coordinated, regional CCS development could create.

The opportunity CCS offers isn’t limited by state or local borders. By taking a broader view, we can make the most of our region’s combined efforts. This approach helps bring together key partners in academia, government, communities, and industry, making it easier to collaborate, share information, and engage with the public. Our members remain strongly committed to growing CCS in ways that prioritize safety, environmental responsibility, transparency, and meaningful community involvement. We’re focused on advancing CCS responsibly, in a way that reflects the region’s needs and goals. By expanding these efforts, we reaffirm our commitment to strengthening our communities and helping make the region a leader in low-carbon energy.

Calpine has long been at the forefront of the power generation’s transition to cleaner sources of reliable energy through its advocacy for market-based policies that prioritize competition and environmental responsibility.  As part of that effort, and due to market demands, we have invested in CCS across the country. Our support for the Gulf Coast CCS Alliance is a reflection of that commitment and a recognition of the invaluable advocacy and education efforts on behalf of its member companies and the communities they serve.

In a time when energy demand is growing AND decarbonization goals are on the global clock, ExxonMobil is taking big steps to expand and strengthen our CCS operations along the U.S. Gulf Coast — one of the world’s most crucial hubs for energy production and heavy industry. As operators of CCS projects across Louisiana and Texas, we are proud to work with the Gulf Coast CCS Alliance to help advance a robust carbon capture and storage industry that supports economic growth and a lower‑emissions future.

Chevron aims to advance carbon capture and storage (CCS) solutions that can help strengthen U.S. energy security. We support expanding the Houston CCS Alliance beyond Houston/Southeast Texas to help accelerate broader CCS efforts along the U.S. Gulf Coast. This broader reach could help support CCS technology developments, our projects at Bayou Bend (with co-owners Equinor and TotalEnergies) and Pascagoula Refinery, and enable collaborations that could lower the carbon intensity of industries along the Gulf Coast.
